This is a great analysis of all the ways the analogy breaks down. I think one defense of the analogy is that if it’s just being used to make the argument that an unbelievably complex system of information processing (which surely an LLM is) can emerge from algorithmically iterating small, mindless local changes, which you might not prima facie believe. After all, it is true that both evolution and deep learning optimization are hill climbing algorithms that work by repeatedly making small mindless local changes. They share this basic quality but as you point out, nearly everything else is different.
